VA / MGIB
Department of Veterans Affairs and the Montgomery GI Bill
The key to continued success and readiness of any modern organization is education of its members. An organization interested in education attracts innovators with new ideas who keep the team moving forward. The Veterans Administration administers benefit programs to accomplish this end. Program descriptions of education benefits including documents and forms to aid veterans are available at: http://www.gibill.va.gov/.
Top Up
Public Law 106-398 provides Montgomery GI Bill participants the opportunity to use MGIB benefits to "Top Up" tuition assistance. A Soldier (officer or enlisted) eligible for chapter 30 MGIB benefits can elect to receive MGIB benefits for all or part of the remaining expenses not covered by tuition assistance. Ask about Top Up when applying for Federal Tuition Assistance.
Additional MGIB Benefits
Service members who entered active duty on or after 1 July 1985 and have maintained MGIB eligibility have the opportunity to increase their basic MGIB benefits. Public Law 106-419 authorizes service members who are eligible to contribute up to $600 for additional basic MGIB benefits. The maximum contribution of $600 would increase basic benefits by $5,400. Visit your education center for additional information and to process the paperwork.
