LTC William G. McDonough received his ROTC commission in 1991 from the California State University, Sacramento.

From 1992 to 1995, he was assigned to 2-87th IN Regt, 10th MTN DIV (LI) at Fort Drum, NY as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Anti-Tank Platoon Leader, and Battalion S-1. From 1996 to 2000, he served in Germany with A CO, 302nd MI BN as the Corps Intelligence Targeting OIC, All Source Intelligence Production Chief, and Deputy Collection Manager; HHSC, 165th MI BN as the S3 Training Officer and HHSC Company Commander; and the 22nd SIG BDE as the Brigade S2. From 2000-2004, he was assigned to Fort Drum, NY with the 2-78th Training Support Brigade as the Brigade S2 and the 10th MTN DIV (LI) as the G2 Exercises OIC and 110th MI BN S3. Between 2004 and 2006, he was a student at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL. From 2006 to 2009, he served again with the 10th MTN DIV (LI) at Fort Drum, NY as the G2 Plans OIC and Analysis and Control Element Chief. The Department of the Army selected him to be the Senior Army Fellow from 2009-2010 at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Honolulu, HI. From 2010-2011, he was assigned to Fort Shafter, HI as Chief, Plans and Exercises for the USARPAC G2 directorate.

LTC McDonough has deployed in support of Operations Hurricane Andrew, Restore Hope, Uphold Democracy, Joint Endeavor, Enduring Freedom IV and VII, and Iraqi Freedom VI.

LTC McDonough's military education and training includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Infantry Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Military Intelligence Transition and Advanced Courses, Imagery Intelligence Officer's Course, Intelligence Collection Manager's Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, Air Command and Staff College, and School of Advanced Air and Space Studies. His civilian education includes B.A. and M.A. degrees in History from the California State University, Sacramento; an M.S. degree in Military Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College; and an M.S. degree in Airpower Arts and Science from the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies.

LTC McDonough's military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four OLCs, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two OLCs, Army Achievement Medal with two OLCs, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Drill Instructor Identification Badge.

LTC McDonough is married to the former Rachel Peters and they have six children.
